In reply to Scott. Scott, just my personal take here, but I tend to go with the advice my dad gave me long ago. Boys wear shorts. Men wear pants. Old school admittedly, but I think it makes sense. You can always get linen pants. Up to you though and I am sure I might change my tune if I lived in SC!

I appreciate the article. I saw the bit on shorts, and wanted to ask:

I’m just starting out here in South Carolina. It’ll be 90+ degrees at 90% humidity from June to September. I plan to door-knock a lot, several hours straight, in this weather. I do not want to come off unprofessional or disrespectful, nor a sweaty mess. What would you recommend?

In reply to Brian Durham. Agree 100%. What you wear is highly dependent on the local climate. Wearing a wool suit in Miami in the summer sounds like a recipe for instant misery.

I admit this article was both enlightening and a bit confusing to me. Don’t get me wrong, I agree with most of the basic principles that apply to dressing well, period. My issue is moreso that I’ve never actually seen a realtor in a suit or blazer, despite having three different close relatives who are. Then again, I live in a very, very warm and humid area of the country (New Orleans), where people consider wearing any sort of jacket (or indeed, long sleeves) between April and October a quick trip to heat stroke. I’m sure things like that are seen as much more professional in areas where the climate is more temperate. For the sunbelt areas, I’d say light-coloured, lightweight chinos and dress shirts of either short or long sleeves are far more common than navy, grey or charcoal year-round.
